Shoes For Schools
A Canadian Student Initiative
going into our 13th year
In 2010, for my 8th birthday, I decided to ask for shoes instead of presents so I could donate them to a local school in Montreal.
That year I donated 22 pairs.
The following year I collected more shoes at my birthday party but it didn't seem like my donation was going to be a very big help in a school for 200 children
In 2012 my own school, Selwyn House School of Montreal, agreed to my request to ask the the Elementary School to bring in donations. We fixed the last day to bring in shoes and boots as October 18th, my birthday. That year I was able to donate 100 pairs of shoes.
In 2015 the shoes drive expanded to include Selwyn's Middle School and the total amount collected was 489 pairs.
In 2016 I officially named the shoe drive SHOES FOR SCHOOLS and, with the help of three local girls' schools, Miss Edgar's and Miss Cramp's, The Study School for Girls and The Sacred Heart School of Montreal, we were able to collect 623 pairs of shoes and boots.
Shoes For Schools was thrilled to be honoured at WE Day Montreal with a 150.00 contribution towards future expenses courtesy of the #150RBC initiative as part of their #MakeCanadaCount campaign.
Our video can be seen on their website.
With the demand for donations increasing, Shoes For Schools was able to enlist the support of both Trafalgar School for Girls as well as The Priory School of Montreal.
Jack and Jill store located on Queen Mary , Montreal, have also supported us with BRAND NEW SHOES for the last two years; 2017 and 2018!
Our 10th year started out with a bang as we received commitments from all of our member schools for the October 2019 campaign as well as a very welcome donation from
The Hay Foundation.
And then COVID 19.
We had arranged to distribute our donations in the spring of 2020 but found ourselves locked out of all schools as of mid-March.
2020 was the year to give back and we are thrilled we have such a large supply of gently used shoes and boots and, so, with the implementation o f social-distancing school collections this fall we had hoped to make the largest donation ever to both our schools and Share the Warmth. COVID added some setbacks to those plans but we were able to continue the drive and donated two new schools in 2020 and a newer one in 2021.
Eva joined us in 2021 as more hands are sorely needed. Welcome Eva!
